Snap areas
Drag a window by its title bar to an edge or corner of the screen, and it snaps there.
Snap a window by dragging
- Drag a window by its title bar to an edge or corner of the screen. A footprint shows where it will go.
- Let go. The window snaps to the footprint.
To drop it normally, move away from the edge before you let go.
Default snap areas
Landscape displays (wider than tall) use these areas.
| Where you drop it | What happens |
|---|---|
| Top edge | Maximize |
| Left edge | Left Half |
| Right edge | Right Half |
| Top-left corner | Top Left |
| Top-right corner | Top Right |
| Bottom-left corner | Bottom Left |
| Bottom-right corner | Bottom Right |
| Bottom edge, left third | First Third |
| Bottom edge, middle third | Center Third |
| Bottom edge, right third | Last Third |
A corner is the first 150 px of each edge next to it, and wins over the edge.
Portrait displays
Displays taller than they are wide have their own set.
| Where you drop it | What happens |
|---|---|
| Top edge | Maximize |
| Top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right corner | The matching quarter |
| Left or right edge, upper half | Top Half |
| Left or right edge, lower half | Bottom Half |
| Bottom edge, left half | Left Half |
| Bottom edge, right half | Right Half |
Each display uses the set that fits its own shape.
With more than one display
- An edge that touches another display snaps only when you pause the pointer at it. Sweeping across does not snap.
- Corners snap right away, even on a shared edge.
- To make shared edges snap at once or never, set
advanced.snap_shared_edgesto"always"or"never"in the config file.
Change what an area does
- Open Settings → Snap Areas.
- Under Landscape snap areas or Portrait snap areas, click the button next to an area on the picture of the display.
- Pick an action, such as one of your custom sizes, or Nothing to turn that area off.
- Click Save.
Drag a snapped window away
A window you snapped by dragging gets its earlier size back when you drag it away.
- If you moved or resized it since the snap, it keeps its size.
- To keep the snapped size, untick Restore window size when unsnapped.
Snap Areas settings
- Snap windows by dragging
snap.enabled - Default: on. Turns drag-to-snap on or off.
- Stretch to full height when resizing to the top or bottom
snap.resize_fills_height - Default: on. Drag a top or bottom border to the screen edge to fill the full height, keeping the width.
- Restore window size when unsnapped
snap.restore_on_unsnap - Default: on. A snapped window you drag away gets its earlier size back.
- Animate footprint
gesture.animate_footprint - Default: on. The footprint slides instead of jumping, here and for throws.
- Landscape snap areas
[snap.zones] - Default: as in the landscape table.
- Portrait snap areas
[snap.portrait_zones] - Default: as in the portrait table.
- Edge trigger distance (px)
snap.edge_margin - Default: 48. Range 1 to 100. How near the edge (or the top of the taskbar) the pointer must be.
- Corner size (px)
snap.corner_size - Default: 150. Range 10 to 1000. How far each corner area reaches along its two edges.
- Require modifiers (Pro)
snap.require_modifiers - Default: none (always snaps). Snap areas, snap targets and the snap panel react only while you hold these keys (and an optional Record key).
- Footprint color (Pro)
snap.footprint_color - Default: Follow the accent color. Untick it to give the footprint and snap target rings their own color.
- Footprint opacity (Pro)
snap.footprint_alpha - Default: 35 %. From invisible to solid; the outline always stays visible.
- Draw a lighter border around the footprint (Pro)
snap.footprint_border - Default: on. A thin outline so the footprint shows on any background.
Tips
- Snapped windows keep the gaps between windows and at the screen edges.
- While a window is pinned, snap areas on that display fill the space beside it.
- Snapping to a custom size never runs its “Then” action.
