Cursor movement
Place, move and resize the window under the pointer with the mouse alone. All are Pro features, included in the 7-day trial.
Throw and Move & Resize are on Settings → Cursor Movement. Quick Throw has its own page, Settings → Quick Throw.
Window Throw
- Point at the window and hold Ctrl+Alt.
- Move the mouse toward where the window should go. A footprint shows where it will land.
- Let go of the keys.
- There are eight directions, counted from where you pressed the keys. Move into another one and the footprint follows.
- Nothing is picked until the pointer has moved 40 px (the Dead zone).
- To cancel, press Esc before you let go, or move back to the start.
Long Throw
Keep moving past 220 px and a second set of eight targets takes over. Move back and the first set returns.
Default targets
| Direction | Throw | Long Throw |
|---|---|---|
| Left | Left Half | First Third |
| Right | Right Half | Last Third |
| Up | Maximize | Almost Maximize |
| Down | Almost Maximize | Center |
| Up-left | Top Left | Top Left Sixth |
| Up-right | Top Right | Top Right Sixth |
| Down-left | Bottom Left | Bottom Left Sixth |
| Down-right | Bottom Right | Bottom Right Sixth |
To change a target:
- Click Configure on the Targets line under Window Throw or Long Throw to open the compass.
- Pick any action for a direction, including custom sizes, layouts, stash or Nothing.
- Click outside the compass, then Save.
A Long Throw direction left at Same as Throw keeps its Throw target.
Throw with a mouse button
- On Cursor Movement, under Mouse, click Record mouse button, press the middle, Back (X1) or Forward (X2) button, then click Save.
- Point at a window, hold that button and move the mouse. Let go to place it.
Window Throw settings
- Modifier keys → Hold (Pro)
gesture.modifiers - Default: Ctrl and Alt. Any mix of Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Win and one recorded key; no keys and no mouse button turns Throw off.
- Mouse button
gesture.mouse_button - Default: None. Middle, Back (X1) or Forward (X2) also throws while held.
- Acts on
gesture.target - Default: the window under the mouse. Or the focused window, wherever the pointer is.
- Configure (Window Throw and Long Throw)
[gesture.directions][gesture.long_directions] - Default: as in the table above.
- Target cursor
gesture.cursor - Default: Reticle. Marks where the throw started: Reticle, Dot or None.
- Size
gesture.cursor_size - Default: Medium. Five steps, Smallest to Largest.
- Color
gesture.cursor_color - Default: Follow the accent color. Untick it to pick another color.
- Min distance to trigger (Long Throw)
gesture.long_distance - Default: 220 px. How far the mouse must move for the Long Throw targets.
Behind the ••• button next to Configure:
- Scrolling resizes the footprint
gesture.scroll_adjust - Default: off. Each wheel notch resizes the target by 5 %, or, with the Mouse wheel list, switches between Throw and Long Throw.
- Ignore windows without a title bar
gesture.ignore_untitled - Default: off. No throw starts on popups, splash screens, borderless games and docked panels.
- Safe area
gesture.ignore_edge_px - Default: off. No throw starts this close to a display's edge.
- Min distance to appear
gesture.footprint_after_px - Default: right away. How far the pointer moves before the footprint shows; letting go sooner still throws.
- Dead zone
gesture.deadzone - Default: 40 px. How far the mouse moves before a direction is picked; raise it to stop accidental throws.
- Animate the footprint
gesture.animate_footprint - Default: on. The footprint slides instead of jumping, also when dragging to snap.
Quick Throw
Tap the keys while moving over a window and it goes that way at once, with no footprint.
- Turn it on: Settings → Quick Throw, the switch next to the page title, then Save.
- Move the pointer across a window in the direction it should go.
- While moving, tap Ctrl+Shift (let go within about a third of a second). The window goes to that direction's Throw target.
The tap does nothing if you hold an extra key, press another key or click during it.
Quick Throw settings
- The switch next to the Quick Throw title (Pro)
quick_throw.enabled - Default: off. Turns Quick Throw on.
- Modifier keys → Tap
quick_throw.modifiers - Default: Ctrl and Shift. The keys to tap, plus an optional recorded key.
- Directions
[quick_throw.directions] - Default: the Window Throw targets. Pick an action to give a direction its own target, or Same as Throw.
- Minimum cursor travel distance
quick_throw.min_distance - Default: same as Throw (the dead zone, 40 px). Less movement around the tap does nothing.
Move & Resize
Hold keys and the window under the pointer follows the mouse, no title bar or edge needed. Both are off until you pick keys.
- On Cursor Movement, under Move & Resize, tick keys in the Move row, for example Alt.
- Tick a different set in the Resize row, for example Alt+Shift, and click Save.
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Move | Point at the window, hold the Move keys and move the mouse. |
| Resize | Point near a corner, hold the Resize keys and move the mouse. |
| Drop | Let go of the keys. |
| Cancel | Press Esc while holding the keys. |
- A maximized window is restored first, under the pointer.
- Other keys and clicks still reach the app, so Alt+Tab and Alt+F4 work.
Move & Resize settings
- Move
move_resize.move_modifiers - Default: none ticked (off). The keys to hold to move, plus an optional recorded key.
- Resize
move_resize.resize_modifiers - Default: none ticked (off). The keys to hold to resize; the same keys as Move turn Resize off.
- Smallest size (behind •••)
advanced.move_resize_min - Default: 200 × 150 px. Resize never makes a window smaller than this.
Choosing modifier keys
Give each feature its own keys.
| Feature | Default | Works well |
|---|---|---|
| Window Throw | Ctrl+Alt | Ctrl+Alt |
| Quick Throw | Ctrl+Shift (off) | Ctrl+Shift |
| Move | off | Alt |
| Resize | off | Alt+Shift |
- If held keys match two features, the larger set wins: Alt+Shift resizes though Alt moves.
- On a tie, Move or Resize wins, so don't give them the Throw keys.
- Alt alone works without opening the app's menu bar, but some apps use Alt with the mouse too.
- Win works without opening the Start menu, for example Ctrl+Win.
Record key
Click the Record key box in the Hold, Tap, Move or Resize row and press one more key to hold, such as Caps Lock, F13 or a letter.
- The key keeps its own job (Caps Lock still toggles), so pick one you don't type with.
- To remove it, click × or press Backspace in the box.
- In the config file it reads like
ctrl+alt+capslock. - The same box is on Snap Areas, Stash and the Menu page.
